Parental Advisory

So, today Deagan and Josh had a rough morning. Let's just say Deagan had a HUGE fit over chocolate milk. Anyway, when I picked up Deagan from afterschool club, he had a book and a CD that he had checked out from the bookmobile, and extension from the Corvallis Public Library.

The Bookmobile comes to D's after school program once a month. Anyway, he was sooooo excited because he had gotten a CD for his Dad. I asked D what CD it was, and he said Korn. I said, does Daddy like Korn (we do not listen to Korn), and D said yes. I happened to be on the phone with Josh, and he said you'd better check the CD for parental advisory. After we got home and I unloaded the kids, bags, and went through D's backpack, I found the CD and there was parental advisory. I couldn't believe that the bookmobile would let a 5 year old check this out. I immediately called Josh, who was irate. I then called the bookmobile, thinking it is 530, they wont be there, and they weren't so I left a message that I was concerned with something that my 5 year old checked out. About 15 minutes later, after I called my Mom and Nan, the guy called me back.

I explained the situation, and he validated my concerns. Apparently, they are not allowed to tell anyone, even 5 year olds who can't read, what they can and cannot check out due to freedom of whatever. Anyway, he was very nice, and said that he was the one who checked the CD out to D. He said that he questioned D about the music a couple of times, and D kept saying it is for my Dad he really likes Korn (not). I still haven't figured out if they library guy told him the name, or if all of the sudden he can read. The guy said that he really appreciated my phone call because there are a lot of parents out there that don't care, and that we were really good parents for doing so. He also said the teachers are usually in the bookmobile, today they weren't, and the teachers normally say what is appropriate and what isn't. Still, I am very frustrated that any 5 year old can get a CD like this.

The CD will go back tomorrow. I told D that it was so nice for him to get a CD for daddy and that it was very thoughtful, but anything that has the parental advisory label (I showed him the label), wasn't for 5 year olds, and that you had to be really really old to get these types of CDs....he asked if daddy was really really old to get it since he likes Korn so much, and I said yes (sorry Josh) :) And, next time to stick with country music like Rodney Atkins. D agreed, and went off to play.

However, I can't help but smile, and my heart warms that he would try and get his dad something on his own. D is so thoughtful, and has such a warm heart for all of his family and friends. He is so sensitive and was only trying to surprise his daddy.
